The Montgomery County Maryland Chapter of Twigs, Inc. stands as a testament to the vision and determination of its organizers, Michele N. Freeman and Thalia Theodore Washington. Their journey began on September 7, 2023, when they rallied their personal and professional networks to establish an interest group that would serve the moms and families of Maryland by offering enriching cultural, educational, and social opportunities. Michele and Thalia's decision to reach out to Carlena Saunders of the North Montgomery County, Pennsylvania chapter of Twigs, Inc. proved to be a transformative moment. Mrs. Saunders's unwavering dedication to Twigs, Inc. and its future development, offered them not only her support but also her enduring love and guidance. Through her compassionate leadership, Mrs. Saunders became a beacon of hope and unity within Twigs, Inc., embodying the enduring spirit of its founder, Clara Bostic. Like Bostic, Saunders understands that the strength of any community lies in its connections and the genuine care shared among its members. Her approach to leadership goes beyond conventional methods, focusing instead on fostering a supportive and inclusive environment where every individual feels valued. This dedication to nurturing personal relationships and community ties has not only propelled Twigs, Inc. to new heights but has also profoundly impacted the lives of countless individuals. Mrs. Saunders' unwavering commitment to Clara Bostic's vision demonstrates the extraordinary difference one person can make by leading with empathy and compassion.
Michele and Thalia's efforts bore fruit with the official chartering of the Montgomery County Maryland Chapter on September 21, 2024, in a memorable ceremony at the Gaithersburg Regional Library. The leadership team, including Michele as President and Thalia as Vice President, along with a dedicated executive board, embarked on a mission to foster a community environment where families learn the values of work, play, and service together. The chapter's foundational ethos is to empower children to embrace their identities, uplift their communities, and support one another through acts of love and service. This new chapter not only honors the dedication of its chartering members but also builds a legacy of unity and contribution to the broader community.

Twigs was founded in Philadelphia, PA, in May 1948 by Clara J. Bostic and a small group of mothers with a total of fourteen children. In March 1967, the organization was officially incorporated as Twigs, Inc. under the leadership of Marguerite Thornton, its first Corporate President. Twigs, Inc. is a family-focused organization committed to providing and enhancing the highest educational, physical, social, spiritual, and cultural experiences for school-aged children. Our emblem, a twig, represents the fragile nature of children, while the family symbolizes the branches and trees that offer support to the delicate twigs. With proper nurturing, these offshoots can withstand challenges and thrive into resilient, strong individuals. Twigs can bend but are rarely broken.
Twigs, Inc. is dedicated to enhancing the lives of families and children through meaningful initiatives. Our mission focuses on creating impactful experiences that foster connection, growth, and community engagement. Here’s how we contribute to a brighter future:
